چکیده

New developments in pressure- and thermally driven membrane desalination technologies offer the potential to cost-effectively treat high-salinity waters, especially when powered by low-cost solar electricity thermal energy. This paper presents a comparative techno-economic assessment of state-of-the-art most promising for high recovery desalination, namely, osmotically-assisted reverse osmosis (OARO) batch-operated vacuum-air-gap distillation (batch V-AGMD), produce potable water while concentrating brine within range 140–290 g/L TDS minimum-liquid-discharge (MLD) zero-liquid-discharge (ZLD) applications. It is shown that both OARO batch V-AGMD can feedwater brines with 30–125 corresponding fresh rates 85–25%. When low cost energy are used, resulting levelized (LCOW) from 0.70–6.28 $/m3, batch-V-AGMD 1.74–2.77 $/m3. more cost-effective than salinity below 70 75%, whereas at higher levels. The sensitivity this comparison on prices module costs discussed.

Energy Consumption Optimization of Reverse Osmosis Membrane Water Desalination Subject to Feed Salinity Fluctuation

We study the energy consumption optimization of a reverse osmosis water desalination process producing a constant permeate flow in the presence of feed concentration fluctuation. We propose a time-varying optimal operation strategy that can significantly reduce the specific energy consumption compared to time-invariant process operation. We present both computational and experimental results th...

Novel Membrane Materials for Reverse Osmosis Desalination

The use of solvents in desalination processes limits the use of certain materials in the construction of the reverse osmosis membranes. Therefore now the research effort has focused on improving new materials. In particular, nanostructured materials will probably form the basis for new reverse osmosis membrane materials. This study makes a review of the new materials used for the construction o...

Multistage vacuum membrane distillation (MSVMD) systems for high salinity applications

Multistage membrane distillation (MD) systems can have significantly higher efficiencies than their single stage counterparts. However, multistage MD system design has received limited attention. In this paper, the performance of a multistage vacuum membrane distillation (MSVMD) which is thermodynamically similar to a multi-stage flash distillation (MSF) is evaluated for desalination, brine con...

Water Desalination by Membrane Distillation

Water is the most common substance in the world, however, 97% is seawater and only 3% is fresh water. The availability of water for human consumption is decreasing due to increasing the environmental pollution. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), about 2.4 billion people do not have access to basic sanitation facilities, and more than one billion people do not have access to safe ...

Desalination/concentration of reverse osmosis and electrodialysis brines with membrane distillation

Brines produced by desalination processes such as reverse osmosis (RO), electrodialysis reversal (EDR) and ion-exchange (IX) holds pollution potential for the water environment if not properly handled. These brines contain a high water content (95–98%) and chemicals that could possibly be recovered for reuse. Therefore, direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) which has the potential for wat...
